Teaching Comedy in Russia

russia

Today is the day! I leave for Moscow to teach a master class in American-style comedy to 25 Russian actors who want to learn that brand of stand-up.

I’ve never seen Russian stand-up. In fact, I’ve never seen a Russian smile, so this will be interesting. Of course I’m joking about the smile. I know a lot of Russian-Americans and there are two things they know how to do: laugh and drink vodka!

I’m sure while I’m there, I will be doing plenty of both.

I’ll be there five days. Think about it five days of caviar, vodka and comedy. What could be better?

Flight & Weather

It’s a 10-hour flight to Munich, then a layover and 3 more hours to Moscow. I arrive at 11pm Tuesday night.

It’s gonna be like 90 degrees here today, and when I arrive in Moscow, the low will be 15. Bring on the vodka!

I’ll be updating several times daily, here on my facebook and twitter pages, so come join. Give me some feeback, give me shit give me your thoughts and prayers that my comedy translates well and doesn’t somehow wind up insulting an entire nation and put me in the gulags somewhere in Siberia! So if you don’t see an update, you know I’m rotting in a Russian prison.

Here we go!

Appear in a Real Motion Picture!

stretch-promo-extrasAs some of you may have heard, my little T.V. show idea, “Stretch,” has been turned into a Big Movie Idea! This process started many years ago, when I was touring 43 weeks a year as a comedian.

My wife wanted me to be home more, so to save my marriage, I cut my road work in half.

During that time, while I was in town, I worked at a limousine company in L.A., both driving and in operations.

While I was working the late night shift, I would sneak in some time at the computer to write some scripts. One of the scripts I wrote was a television show about the limo business. It was going to be kind of a ‘Taxi’ but for limousines.

I brought my friend, (and now writing partner), Rob Rose, in on it, for his brutally fast and sharp wit.

Needless to say, years and one marriage later it has been turned into a comedy-thriller that will be directed by Joe Carnahan (“The Grey,” “The A-Team”).

It’s legit. It has star power from Chris Pine,(Star Trek)  Ed Helms, (The Office, Hangover I, II, III) Patrick Wilson, (The A-Team) and Jessica Biel!

To top it off, it has already been picked up to be distributed by Universal Pictures.

It’s shooting in Los Angeles in July and they are holding an “Open Call” for upscale, trendy club-goers.

It’s simple to get involved, just e-mail stretchcasting@gmail.com and include your name, phone number, email and a picture of yourself in high-end Hollywood nightclub attire. Which means, ladies look smoking hot, and guys look like the typical Hollywood, club-going, douche. Smile

Don’t email me. I have zero input on what happens with this!

One of the things you have to get used to once you sell the rights to your movie is that your creative input goes “poof!”

I hope some of my readers (all 3 of you), can take advantage of this cool opportunity to get involved, not only to be seen in a film with a tight script, but also mingle and have the opportunity to meet other people.

Please read the fine print. There is NO GUARANTEE that when you participate in this event that you will be seen in the motion picture!

But, Hollywood’s a weird place and anything can happen!

There’s has been and there is going to continue to be a lot of really cool lessons to learn from this experience of getting a movie made. I hope to share them with you so maybe you can get some inspiration to expand your writing.

Good luck!

A Chance To Get On Conan

joke-Contest-bannerOkay, when I said a chance to get on Conan, I didn’t actually mean get “on” Conan—I don’t know Conan personally, but from what I’ve heard, he’s a fairly private guy.

But you can get on his show… you know, the one on TBS…

Conan O’Brien and Ricky Gervais have teamed up to find the next comedy star!

That’s right! It’s an opportunity for you—and everyone else reading this blog—to record and submit 3 minutes of comedy.

See, Ricky has developed a new APP for the iPhone that allows you to say something into the phone and it tweets it automatically. He’s calling this app “Just sayin’.”

The contest is called the “Just Sayin’ Stand Up” contest and it’s happening right now; entries are open September 20th to October 21st with winners to be announced on November 7th. Wait—that’s my twins birthdays!

All you have to do is visit the contest site page, download the app to your iPhone and do your best 3 minutes.

Don’t have an iPhone—too bad!

No, wait! Come back! I was just kidding! If you don’t have an iPhone, you can still submit via a special portal on the Just Sayin’ website.

Are you still here? What are you waiting for?! Go get the app or submit via the portal and see if you can get your funny-ass on Conan!

Remember, it’s T.V. so it must be original, clean material and appropriate to air. No slanderous jokes, nothing that defames others… so, he’s taken all the fun out of it… it’s still a awesome opportunity!

So get over to the Just Sayin’ Comedy and submit your best three and best of luck!

Amateur Comedians – Get On T.V. – Comedy Contest for NBC’s “Today Show”

questforthebest-msnbcAmateur Comedians Only!

Here’s something fun and it’s for amateurs only! That’s right. No professionals allowed to submit to this contest. This gives a beginning comedian an opportunity to get into a Nationally televised competition and get exposure completely free! But you have to get on it, because this deadline is quickly approaching! (July 12th, 2012).

So get your 2-minute video clip read and submit it to their comedy competition page. Be sure and read the rules and stuff to make sure you meet the requirements. It’s a typical contest for television. Here are the basics:

  • Be clean
  • All original material only
  • Nothing controversial (judged by the network)
  • Nothing offensive
  • Nothing slanderous
  • Nothing that defames others (Wow there goes my whole act!)

If you get selected, you get flown to New York City to be on the Today Show, which has around six million viewers! That’s a lot of exposure for one morning.

So get your set together and upload it to their site. Here’s the thing: you cannot submit a link to a video, you have to submit a file from your computer.

What Should I Submit?

It’s a two-minute contest so your material should get right to the point and have a laugh point every 18-20 seconds. It should have crystalized surprise so that the punch lines are tight and trigger laughs. Utilize some variation of a quick set up, punch and possibly an act-out. The submission doesn’t necessarily have to have a beginning, middle and end, but if you can make that happen in two minutes, go for it. These are just guidelines, of course so don’t let it stop you from submitting. I’ve seen some unexpected videos get chosen for these things. Just have fun!

So go submit to this comedy competition and Good luck!
