🎭1.5 – Developing Your Comedic Persona

A strong comedic persona gives your material a recognizable point of view and gives audiences a reason to remember you.

In this course, Jerry Corley explains how persona develops from your authentic attitudes, emotions, experiences, flaws, fears, passions, and idiosyncrasies—and why it is different from a single point of view, a performed character, or a repeated piece of shtick.

You will see how comedians such as George Carlin, Bill Burr, Roseanne Barr, Steven Wright, Mitch Hedberg, Jeff Foxworthy, and others use a consistent filter to strengthen their material, connect with audiences, and build a lasting brand.

You will also learn why strong joke mechanics and strong persona are complementary rather than interchangeable.

Through practical exercises, you will examine your recurring dilemmas, reform familiar clichĂ©s from your own perspective, identify what other people see when you perform, and test different emotional approaches to the same topic.

By the end of the lesson, you will have a working persona statement and a repeatable process for refining it through writing, performance, observation, and audience feedback.
