🎭 18.3 Beyond the Punchline – The Art of Shifting Dynamics

A punchline is a Dynamic Shift—but it’s only one kind.

In Beyond the Punchline — The Art of Shifting Dynamics, Jerry Corley shows you how to keep an audience engaged by changing what they’re seeing, hearing, thinking, anticipating, or feeling throughout a joke or story.

You’ll learn how great comedians move beyond straight narration by shifting character, energy, perspective, emotion, status, information, sound, physicality, and circumstance—sometimes before the punchline, sometimes inside the joke, and sometimes after the laugh has already landed.

Through examples from Robin Williams, Maria Bamford, and Brian Regan, you’ll explore act-outs, character switches, He-Said/She-Said dialogue, catalysts, status shifts, comedic irony, dialects, sound effects, diegetic interruptions, physicalization, sudden stops, tempo changes, reactions, and escalation.

You’ll also work through practical writing exercises designed to turn ordinary narration into active comedy scenes—adding antagonists, creating character conflict, shifting from third-person reporting into first-person act-outs, and finding moments where the audience can experience the emotion instead of simply hearing about it.

The goal is simple:

Stop asking only, “What’s the next punchline?”

Start asking:

“What changes next?”

Talk about accents & voices. If you liked this class,  DON'T MISS THIS ONE!
