This drill gives you two unrelated but recognizable ideas. Your job is not to wait for a joke to appear. Your job is to force a relationship between two worlds that normally do not belong together.
How to Use This Exercise
Do not try to write the punchline first. Start by building two lists. The joke usually appears when one list suddenly behaves like the other.
List associations.
Write 10–20 people, places, things, rules, emotions, clichés, frustrations, rituals, and behaviors for each idea.
Find overlaps.
Ask: How are these alike? What rules do they share? What would one look like inside the world of the other?
Build the joke.
Create a setup from the normal world, then use the second idea to create the surprise, analogy, reverse, or assumption flip.
Example
Dog Park + Sailboat
Dog park associations: leashes, barking, sniffing, owners, bags, chasing, territorial behavior.
Sailboat associations: wind, knots, captain, drifting, expensive hobby, no brakes, people pretending they know what they are doing.
Possible collision: “A dog park is like a sailboat. Everyone acts like they’re in control, but really they’re just being dragged around by something with no respect for human plans.”
